Tragic Tour Bus Crash on New York Highway Claims Five Lives: What You Need to Know

Five people lost their lives in a tragic bus accident on the New York State Thruway in western New York. According to police, the group was returning from a trip to Niagara Falls when the bus veered out of control and overturned. Most victims were tourists from India, China, and the Philippines.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul assured that local officials were on-site to assist those injured. Medical teams, including ambulances and helicopters, rushed to the crash location near Pembroke, about 30 miles east of Buffalo.

Initially, police reported that a child was among the deceased, but they later clarified this was not the case. Fortunately, the bus had 52 passengers, spanning ages from one to 74. Sadly, some passengers were thrown from the bus during the crash, and many were not wearing seat belts. Others were trapped in the wreckage for hours.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated. Police ruled out mechanical failure and impairment of the driver. They described the driver as cooperative, and no charges have been filed yet.

Witnesses reported seeing the bus overturned, with belongings scattered across the road. One bystander, Powell Stephens, recalled seeing shattered glass and debris.

Continuing care is being provided for the injured. Twenty-four adults were admitted to a local hospital and are expected to recover fully. Other patients were transferred to a children’s hospital for care.

In response to the crisis, ConnectLife, a local blood donation organization, has launched an emergency appeal. Spokeswoman Sarah Diina stated, “Our community is facing a crisis,” emphasizing the importance of donations at this time.

The Red Cross set up a family reunification center to help link children with their parents who were taken to various hospitals. Authorities are also asking drivers with dashcam footage of the scene to come forward, as it may help in the ongoing investigation.
