Witnesses have shared chilling accounts. David Tucker III, a 20-year-old who was fishing nearby, heard the train approach. He described how the engineer repeatedly sounded the horn. He then witnessed four to five people fall into the river from approximately 20 feet above. He immediately called 911 when he realized the severity of the situation.

His father, David Tucker Jr., was also nearby and heard the train’s frantic braking. He saw people in panic outside his home and immediately contacted his son, knowing he was in the area. According to the Tuckers, the victims seemed to be crossing a railway trestle that bears a no-trespassing sign.

Train-related accidents aren’t commonplace, but they can be deadly. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were nearly 1,000 train-related pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. last year, highlighting the dangers of trespassing near tracks.

While authorities are investigating what led to this incident, it raises questions about safety measures for pedestrians near railroads, especially in areas that may seem isolated.
