Tragic Turn: Omega Psi Phi Chapter Expelled from Southern University Following Caleb Wilson’s Death – Blavity

The Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at Southern University has been expelled due to serious hazing allegations. This decision came after the tragic death of 20-year-old student Caleb Wilson, who died during a hazing incident earlier this year.

Caleb McCray, a 23-year-old student, faces charges related to Wilson’s death. He is accused of criminal hazing and manslaughter. Witnesses reported that on February 26, during a fraternity meeting, Wilson and eight other pledges were made to line up. At least three fraternity members, including McCray, allegedly took turns punching the pledges with boxing gloves. Witnesses say that McCray punched Wilson four times in the chest.

After being struck, Wilson collapsed and appeared to seize before losing consciousness. His friends rushed him to the hospital, where doctors found a bruise on his chest during the autopsy.

Following Wilson’s death, Omega Psi Phi issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over his passing. Ricky L. Lewis, the Grand Basileus of the fraternity, described Wilson as a beloved member of the community: a scholar, a talented member of Southern University’s Marching Band, and a committed student leader.

Founded in 1911, Omega Psi Phi has been a significant presence at Southern University for many years. However, the recent events led the university to revoke the fraternity’s recognition and privileges, and all their physical markers, like benches and monuments, will be removed from campus.

Hazing continues to be a pressing issue in organizations on college campuses. A 2022 study by the National Institute on Hazing found that nearly 55% of college students involved in clubs or organizations experienced hazing. This statistic highlights the need for strict policies and education about the dangers of hazing.

Experts suggest that universities must take a stronger stance against such practices. Dr. David K. Stulberg, a sociologist specializing in student organizations, notes that “to create a safe environment, institutions need consistent policies and open dialogues about the harm caused by hazing.”
