Tragic Twist: New Yorker Fatally Shot After Traveling to Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny Concert, Police Report

Tourist Killed in Puerto Rico Amid Bad Bunny Concerts

A tragic incident unfolded in Puerto Rico when a tourist from the U.S. lost his life during a visit for Bad Bunny’s concert. Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old from New York, was fatally shot in La Perla, a well-known coastal area that has struggled with crime in the past.

The shooting occurred around 4:13 a.m. at a local nightspot. Police say it began with an argument among some people nearby. During the chaos, one individual drew a gun, injuring Mares along with two others, a brother and sister who lived in the area. Mares, an innocent bystander, was struck in the abdomen and rushed to the largest public hospital in Puerto Rico, where he sadly passed away.

Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz noted that the motive behind the argument was still unclear. Currently, no description of the shooter is available, making the investigation challenging. Ruiz mentioned that Mares’s friends, also from New York, were with him and that they were excited to experience one of Bad Bunny’s multiple concerts, which have brought thousands of visitors to the region.

In a concerning twist, La Perla is often depicted as a tourist attraction but has a complicated history. Once notorious for drug trafficking and violence, it has seen improvements in safety over the past decade. The area made headlines in 2011 when federal agents conducted extensive raids.

Despite these efforts, sporadic violence remains a problem. Just months before Mares’s murder, three tourists were stabbed over a filming incident, and another tourist was tragically murdered after being warned against taking pictures in La Perla.

With Puerto Rico experiencing 277 homicides so far this year, the police and locals continue to grapple with the balance between promoting tourism and ensuring safety. Before visiting areas with complex histories, travelers should approach with caution and stay informed about local conditions.

While this incident is a stark reminder of ongoing safety challenges, it also highlights the need for communities and authorities to work together. As concerts and tourism continue to thrive, safety measures must evolve to protect both residents and visitors alike.
