Tragic UNM Dorm Shooting: Arrest Made After One Fatality

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Early Friday morning, a tragic shooting at a University of New Mexico dormitory took the life of a 14-year-old boy and injured a 19-year-old. The incident quickly led to the evacuation of hundreds of students and a campus-wide search for the suspect, an 18-year-old male who has since been arrested.

University officials lifted a shelter-in-place order later in the afternoon but kept the Albuquerque campus closed as the investigation continued. Students were allowed to eat in the dining hall and return to their dorms but were advised to steer clear of the crime scene.

According to law enforcement, four individuals were playing video games in a dorm room when the shooting erupted. The motive behind the incident remains unclear, and police are collaborating with prosecutors to prepare charges.

The University of New Mexico has approximately 23,000 students each year. Currently, many newcomers are on campus for orientation, making the event particularly unsettling for them. Mikey Beck, a new freshman, expressed his concern after hearing gunfire. “It’s really sketchy out here. Just being in Albuquerque is really scary,” he lamented.

The city of Albuquerque has faced rising violent crime, especially among young people. District Attorney Sam Bregman recently called for stronger legislative action to tackle this alarming trend. His comments follow other incidents of youth-related violence, including a recent fatal hit-and-run and a serious shooting in March that resulted in numerous casualties.

After the dorm shooting, Mayor Tim Keller extended his condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the need for community support during such crises. He stressed the heartbreak felt within the University community.

As part of the response, increased police presence will be implemented on and around the campus in the coming days. University President Garnett Stokes acknowledged the anxiety new students and their families might feel.

According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, incidents of gun violence among youths have increased sharply over the last decade.
