Authorities in Colima, Mexico, reported the deaths of three individuals linked to the tragic shooting of two family members of Mario Delgado, the Secretary of Public Education. The incident occurred early Saturday morning, claiming the lives of Delgado’s aunt and cousin.
Colima is known for its high levels of violence, having recorded the highest homicide rate in Mexico for 2023 and 2024, according to the U.S. State Department. The motives behind this attack remain unclear, and authorities have not disclosed whether they are pursuing additional suspects.
Delgado expressed his deep sorrow on social media, sharing vivid memories of his aunt, whom he affectionately referred to as “Queña.” She was known for making birthday cakes and preparing traditional Colima dishes, showcasing her hard work and dedication.
After the shooting, the police tracked down the suspects’ vehicle to a nearby home. A gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of the three suspects. During the investigation, law enforcement discovered weapons and clothing tied to the crime.
Delgado was appointed to his position by President Claudia Sheinbaum in 2024. Before this role, he served as the president of the ruling Morena party.
Following recent violence, Sheinbaum indicated that efforts to tackle Mexican drug cartels are yielding “compelling results.” This comes amid ongoing discussions about U.S. intervention in Mexico to combat drug trafficking. President Trump has previously hinted at using U.S. forces against cartels, claiming significant successes in reducing drug entry by water.
