A tragic incident in Virginia claimed the lives of a family of four from Massachusetts as they traveled to a wedding. Dmitri and Ecaterina Doncev, along with their children Emily and Mark, were on their way with homemade desserts when their vehicle was involved in a devastating crash.
The accident occurred on Interstate 95 around 2:35 a.m. when a bus struck multiple vehicles that had slowed for road work. This collision caused a chain reaction, ultimately affecting the Doncev family’s car. Tragically, another passenger, Priscilla Mafalda, also lost her life in the SUV.
Several others suffered injuries, with reports indicating one person in critical condition, though most have been treated and released.
The bus driver, Jing S. Dong, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Virginia State Police stated there may be more charges pending. Dong, who is being treated for injuries in a hospital, is held without bond while awaiting his first court appearance.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash, a lengthy process aimed at uncovering the causes. NTSB board member Tom Chapman noted that the bus was traveling at a high speed and seemed to show little sign of braking before the collision. Language proficiency of the driver may also be examined, as Dong reportedly does not speak English.
Dmitri, a dedicated nurse at Holyoke Medical Center, and Ecaterina, a hairstylist, emigrated from Moldova to the U.S. in 2008. They had friends and relatives who knew them well. Carolina Bublik, a family relative, shared that they were a loving family, deeply cherished by those around them.
Their journey had been planned carefully; they aimed to celebrate a wedding with loved ones. But in a sudden twist of fate, plans turned into grief.
Incidents like this highlight the critical importance of road safety, particularly in work zones. According to the Federal Highway Administration, nearly 754 fatalities occurred in work zones in 2019 alone. This emphasizes the need for increased awareness and caution among drivers and better practices in road construction.
