Trailblazer on the Field: Jen Pawol Shatters MLB Barriers as a Female Umpire

ATLANTA — Jen Pawol just made history as the first female umpire in a major league baseball game during a doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. It’s a milestone that took over a century for women to reach in the sport.

Pawol, 48, reflected on the moment, saying, “I’m aware of the gravity and magnitude” of breaking this barrier. She hopes to inspire young girls and boys alike, showing them that dreams can come true with hard work.

Before this historic game, Pawol worked for years in the minor leagues, officiating over 1,200 games. Her determination paid off when she got the call while in her Nashville hotel room. She was informed by the MLB umpire development team that she would be part of the big leagues. “I was overcome with emotion,” she shared.

Already known in the league, Pawol became a trailblazer when she umpired in the Triple-A International League in 2023 and was the first woman to officiate the league championship game in 35 years. Not only does her debut signal progress, but it also raises awareness about women in sports.

Ted Barrett, a former big-league umpire, pointed out, “It’s a physically demanding job, and Jen is certainly capable.” He hopes her debut will encourage young girls to consider pursuing careers in sports officiating.

Historically, women have made strides in major sports—like the NBA hiring its first female referee in 1997 and the NFL in 2015. However, baseball has lagged behind. Still, Pawol’s achievement highlights a shift that could lead to more women entering this field.

During the game, she received a warm welcome. When her name was announced, the crowd cheered louder for her than for the other umpires. Pawol shook hands with players and coaches, marking her impactful entry into MLB.
