Trans Athlete Makes History with Dual Title Victory at California Track Championships!

CLOVIS, Calif. — A transgender athlete, AB Hernandez, made waves at the California high school track and field championships, bringing home gold in both the girls’ high jump and triple jump. This event has sparked national conversations about gender and sports.

Hernandez, a junior at Jurupa Valley High School, competed under a new rule by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). This policy might be the first of its kind in the country. During the high jump, Hernandez soared to 5 feet, 7 inches, finishing without any failed attempts. She shared the podium with co-winners Jillene Wetteland and Lelani Laruelle, who also cleared the same height but had failed attempts.

In the triple jump, Hernandez secured another first-place finish, tied with Kira Gant Hatcher. Earlier, she placed second in the long jump, where this year’s winner, Loren Webster, jumped over 21 feet. Notably, Olympic champions Marion Jones and Tara Davis-Woodhall once set long jump records of over 22 feet in past championships.

Webster, who focused solely on her performance, said, “I can’t control the uncontrollable.”

The CIF’s recent policy change aims to address the ongoing debate about transgender athletes. Critics, including former President Trump, have called for rules to keep transgender girls from competing in girls’ events. Some expressed their dissent at the championships with signs and banners saying things like “No Boys in Girls’ Sports.”
