The University of Hawaiʻi (UH) and the UH Foundation are gearing up for their second annual Giving Day on April 9, 2025. This day is all about raising vital funds to support students, research, and programs across UH’s ten campuses.

Last year’s inaugural event saw impressive results, with 1,808 donations totaling $593,000. These contributions helped fund various programs at UH, which has faced significant financial challenges alongside many universities nationwide. Early donations this year will be crucial for continuing to offer outstanding educational opportunities and community support.

Donors have the option to support many initiatives, like the Graduate Student Success Fund. This fund aims to assist graduate students at UH, helping them thrive and contribute to Hawaiʻi’s workforce.

Wendy Hensel, the president of UH, emphasized the importance of community support. “The challenges we face today bring us closer together. By giving, we help shape the future of Hawaiʻi and beyond,” she said.

Tim Dolan, CEO of the UH Foundation, added, “Every gift counts—big or small. It’s about strengthening our university and ensuring access to quality education for all.”

New data shows that public universities are increasingly relying on donations as state funding declines. According to a recent report from the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, public colleges have seen a 20% decline in state funding since 2008. This trend underscores the importance of community support for institutions like UH.
