Living with Diabetes: Alex Spalding’s Journey

Diabetes hasn’t stopped Alex Spalding from leading a fulfilling life. After marrying Meagan, they welcomed a lively son into their family. “He has the biggest personality. He’s such a sweetheart,” Alex says about his 20-month-old.
Alex’s journey with diabetes began at just 10 years old. During basketball tryouts, he felt dizzy and confused. A trip to the hospital confirmed his fears: he was diabetic. “I asked my mom, ‘Please, tell me that’s not what it is,’” he remembers. Her teary response confirmed the diagnosis.
Diabetes runs in Alex’s family. He witnessed his father’s struggles firsthand, including episodes where his dad experienced dangerously low blood sugar. “Watching him go through that was tough. Then, to find out I had diabetes too, it was a life-changing moment,” Alex shares.
Initially, traditional treatments didn’t work well for him. But everything changed when he found the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center at the University of Kentucky. “The doctors there are amazing. They’ve really guided me on my diabetes journey,” he says.
As the renowned Kentucky Derby approaches, Alex reflects on the center’s impact. The Barnstable Brown Gala has raised millions, funding crucial research and education to prevent diabetes. This initiative is not just for current patients; it also trains future scientists to continue the fight against the disease.
Thanks to this center, Alex feels empowered as a father. He no longer worries about diabetes affecting his son’s future. “I hope he achieves everything he dreams of,” he says.
According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes affects over 34 million people in the U.S. It’s a pressing issue, but centers like Barnstable Brown are making strides in treatment and education.
In the face of difficulties, Alex’s hope shines bright. With advances in research and medical support, he chooses to focus on a joyful life with his family, embracing each day with positivity.
