I’ve been working out for years and can do sit-ups in my sleep, but activating my core? That’s been tough. A trainer suggested trying the Pallof press, a standing exercise that really changed the game for me.

The Pallof press mainly targets your core muscles, but Monty Simmons, a trainer, says it’s actually a full-body workout. He explains that you engage your arms, shoulders, hips, and legs as you stand and press against resistance. This exercise trains your body to resist forces that can throw you off balance. The strength you build here is useful in everyday activities, like lifting and turning.

How to Perform a Pallof Press

  • Loop a resistance band around a fixed spot and stand sideways to it.
  • Grab the band with both hands and position it in front of your chest, elbows bent.
  • Step away from the anchor until you feel tension in the band.
  • Press your hands forward fully, keeping your body steady.
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other.

When I added the Pallof press to my workouts last summer, I immediately noticed gains in my core strength. Initially, I struggled to feel my core engage because I was moving my upper body too much. Once I focused on keeping my torso stable, the results were instant. I could feel my abs and obliques working hard.

For the Pallof press, I usually use a cable machine at the gym, but a resistance band works great at home, too.
