Scott Kashman, interim market lead for Ascension St. Vincent’s, highlighted the event’s roots, stating, “Our Daughters of Charity started this over 100 years ago.” He emphasized that this initiative goes beyond just providing services; it aims to address the health needs of the Jacksonville community.
Caitlin Brunell, president of the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation, spoke of the deeper mission behind the health services offered. She noted, “It’s really that mental, emotional, and spiritual connection that all of us deserve.” This holistic approach underscores the organization’s commitment to more than just physical health.
Willie Roberts, who manages the Faith Community Nursing program at Ascension, pointed out the challenges many are facing today. With the rising cost of living, he said, “If you’ve been in the marketplace lately, the prices of food and vegetables are astronomical.” This reality makes free health services even more vital.
Shawna and Walter Elkins, who attended the event, agreed. Shawna expressed her gratitude, saying, “I don’t have any insurance, so coming here and being able to get checked out is a big help for me.” Their experiences highlight the growing need for accessible healthcare options.
The event also provided essential resources, such as shoes and groceries, courtesy of Feeding Northeast Florida. Participant Matthew Ryan reflected on the experience positively, saying, “I really love what they’re doing here.”
