In Doha, Qatar, the Institute for Population Health (IPH) at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) recently kicked off its eighth annual Lifestyle Medicine Week. This event aimed to highlight the importance of healthy habits in battling chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart conditions.
The week featured various activities designed to engage the community. A standout event was “Kick-Off a Healthier Lifestyle,” led by Dr. Javaid Sheikh, the dean of WCM-Q. Participants enjoyed fun activities that promoted essential habits such as physical exercise, healthy eating, stress management, and good sleep. They also explored the benefits of social connections for mental health. The ‘Get Connected Trivia Quiz’ encouraged teamwork in a lively quiz atmosphere.
Two online competitions added to the excitement. The “Cornell Cook Off” had participants showcasing their cooking skills via video submissions. Meanwhile, the “Say Yes to Life” initiative focused on the dangers of tobacco and solicited creative entries like photos, infographics, and posters. These activities received robust participation, demonstrating the community’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
Dr. Ravinder Mamtani, a professor at WCM-Q, emphasized the institution’s dedication to fostering healthy choices. “Understanding how lifestyle affects chronic diseases is key to inspiring a healthier, happier future,” he stated.
Historically, public health initiatives have shown positive changes in community health. According to a 2022 report by the World Health Organization, lifestyle changes reduced chronic disease rates in several countries by up to 30%. This supports the idea that education and community engagement can lead to lasting improvements in health.
Dr. Sohaila Cheema, another key figure at IPH, added, “Lifestyle Medicine Week brings a unique educational focus. We’re thrilled to see continued enthusiasm from the community as this initiative grows.”
