Heart Health Concerns: Expert Insights from Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, recent concerns about rising heart attack cases have caught attention. Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharanprakash R. Patil and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao recently shared findings from experts who studied this alarming trend, especially in the Hassan district.

The ministers pointed to changing dietary habits as a major culprit. They emphasized that many people are adopting western food lifestyles, which might be contributing to more heart attacks among younger individuals—something that is increasingly evident across the state.

They dismissed claims linking heart attacks to COVID-19 vaccinations, stating that the rise in cases is more connected to lifestyle shifts and not vaccinations. They noted, “The number of heart attacks remains stable compared to last year.”

To tackle this issue, the ministers stressed the importance of regular health check-ups and daily exercise. They urged citizens to avoid panic and consult doctors if they felt unwell. Additionally, they emphasized the need for better food hygiene standards, especially concerning roadside vendors.

Recent statistics show a troubling trend: in January, out of 178 diagnosed heart attacks, 11 were fatal. February saw 10 deaths among 181 cases, and March reported 9 out of 200. In Bengaluru alone, 101 fatalities were recorded among 2,165 cases. This data highlights the urgency for preventive measures.

Experts suggest lifestyle factors such as unhealthy eating, high stress, and lack of exercise are contributing to this rise. Dr. Ismail Ameen, a cardiologist at Jayadeva Hospital, points out that a balanced diet rich in traditional foods, regular exercise, and stress management can significantly reduce risks.

Heart disease is not just a health issue; it’s a societal concern. With increased screen time and sedentary lifestyles, especially among young people, awareness and action are crucial. Community education initiatives are underway, driven by the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, to promote heart health.
