A recent study in the UK explored the causes of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) to help people make better lifestyle choices. This research, published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, doesn’t pinpoint exact causes or guarantee specific outcomes. Instead, it gathers data from nearly 500,000 participants to identify 56 non-clinical risk factors associated with SCA.

Some findings are clear. For instance, eating fruits and maintaining a healthy weight relate to a lower risk of SCA. However, not everything is straightforward. Interestingly, those with desk jobs showed lower rates of cardiac arrest. This might stem from better financial conditions that allow these workers to lead healthier lifestyles, rather than the job itself being beneficial.

As Huihuan Luo, the lead author, noted, “We conducted an exposome-wide association study, which examines the connections between various environmental factors and health.” This study suggests that simple changes can significantly reduce SCA risks without expensive treatments. According to the findings, removing just the riskiest third of factors could prevent nearly half of all SCAs.
