Globally, the average life expectancy is about 73.5 years, while in China, it’s around 77.6 years. Healthy living has been linked to a longer life free from major illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. For instance, a 2023 article in the BMJ noted that adopting healthy habits can greatly reduce these risks. Moreover, obesity is a significant risk factor for developing dementia later on, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy weight.

So, what can people over 80 do to boost their chances of living longer? Here are some practical tips:

  • Try to exercise daily, even if it’s just a short walk.
  • Stay physically active throughout the day.
  • Avoid foods that can cause inflammation, like red meat and sugary items.
  • Instead, fill your plate with a mix of fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts.
  • Work on losing excess weight, particularly around the belly.
  • Keep vitamin D levels healthy—aim for above 30 ng/mL.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol altogether.
  • Say no to smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • Protect yourself from too much sun exposure.
  • Be cautious of exposure to harmful chemicals and radiation.
  • Address any chronic infections in the body.
