Looksmaxxing has become a hot topic, especially among young men on TikTok. This trend centers around enhancing appearance, often with the aim of boosting what some refer to as “sexual market value.”
Many users share their goals to refine features like jawlines, cheekbones, and noses. The ideal appearance today leans toward sharper jawlines, fuller lips, and well-defined cheekbones. Influencers like Kareem Shami and Clavicular popularize this movement through transformation videos that attract millions.
Teenage boys eagerly follow these creators for tips, much like they do with fitness influencers. Some suggest simple approaches, known as “softmaxxing,” including skincare routines and hairstyle changes. Others delve into more extreme measures called “hardmaxxing,” which can involve cosmetic procedures like jaw fillers or even risky practices like bone smashing.
Bone smashing is gaining attention for its extreme nature. This trend involves hitting facial bones with the belief that it can enhance jaw and cheekbone strength. However, is there any truth to this? We asked Dr. Devanshu Kalra, a plastic surgeon with extensive experience. He strongly dismissed bone smashing, stating, “There’s no scientific data to support it.”
Dr. Kalra explained that rather than helping, this practice could seriously harm the face, causing nerve damage and increasing the risk of asymmetry. For those genuinely looking to improve their jawlines, he suggested safer options like implants or fillers. Implants offer permanent results, while fillers are temporary but need repeat sessions.
Interestingly, more men today are turning to cosmetic procedures. Dr. Kalra noted that hair transplants and jawline fillers are among the most common requests in his practice. Yet, he emphasized the importance of having realistic expectations: “You come out of OT, not heaven,” he remarked.
According to recent studies, the number of men seeking cosmetic surgery has notably risen—around 30% over the past decade. This change reflects evolving attitudes toward male beauty and self-improvement.
The influence of social media cannot be overlooked. With the rise of looksmaxxing, many young men are now comparing their appearances to those showcased online. Before-and-after photos from influencers frequently circulate, fueling the pressure to conform to these beauty standards.
In a world where appearance often feels linked to self-worth, it’s essential to remember that while enhancing one’s look can boost confidence, the methods chosen should be safe and realistic.
