John Hooks, the chief of the University of Alabama Police Department (UAPD), is stepping down after a decade in the role. He previously worked for almost six years as a deputy in the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s office before becoming chief in 2015.

Under Hooks’ leadership, UAPD grew significantly. The department now has over 100 sworn officers and offers some of the best salaries for police in the area. New recruits can start with salaries exceeding $70,000 annually, thanks to competitive pay packages and benefits that helped attract talent, including Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, who joined UAPD last fall.

The University expressed gratitude for Hooks’ service, emphasizing his role in building a strong and effective team. “His commitment to campus safety has made a lasting impact,” a UA spokeswoman stated.

In recent years, many police departments across the nation face challenges, with recruitment and retention becoming crucial issues. A recent survey by Police Executive Research Forum found that nearly 85% of departments are struggling to hire enough officers. This trend highlights the importance of departments like UAPD, which have adapted to meet these challenges.
