Doctors have achieved a breakthrough in eye treatment, restoring vision for people with a rare condition called hypotony. This condition occurs when the eye’s pressure drops dangerously low, causing it to cave in. Previously, treatment options were limited and often ineffective, but a new approach at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London shows promise.
In a recent study, seven out of eight patients responded positively to a pioneering treatment using a water-based gel called hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPCM). This gel, usually used in some types of eye surgery, is now injected into the eye to counteract the effects of hypotony. Nicki Guy, a 47-year-old mother, is one of the first to benefit from this innovative approach. She described her experience, saying, “It’s life-changing. I can see my child grow up.”
Nicki suffered vision problems following the birth of her son in 2017. Initially, she relied on silicone oil to help restore her sight, but it did little to improve her condition. Her vision had deteriorated so much that she couldn’t see clearly, and everyday tasks became challenging. “I had to navigate my home mostly using memory,” she recalled. But after treatment with the new gel, she can now read most lines on an eye chart and sees much better.
How It Works
Experts decided to try HPCM after realizing traditional methods weren’t working. The gel is safe for long-term use and allows for better vision compared to silicone oil. Mr. Harry Petrushkin, the doctor who performed Nicki’s treatment, expressed amazement at the results. “We could not have dreamed of her having the outcome that she has had. It’s completely remarkable,” he noted.
Statistics from Moorfields suggest that this method could potentially help thousands in the UK each year, but the key factor is whether the patient has viable cells in the eye that can still function. So far, they’ve treated 35 patients, and the results have been published in medical journals, highlighting its effectiveness.
