Galloway, N.J. — Stockton University’s Art Gallery is showcasing a unique exhibition titled “Diverse Perspectives in Photography.” From September 4 to November 8, this exhibit features four Black Guggenheim Fellows: Donald E. Camp, Ron Tarver, William E. Williams, and Wendel A. White. Their works reflect African American history, stories, and experiences.
The exhibition opened with a lively panel discussion on September 24. Tarver shared how meeting Camp inspired him. “I was awestruck,” he said, recalling how Camp became a friend over time. Camp, when reflecting on their bond, mentioned how he hoped Tarver would win his fellowship.
These artists not only share a prestigious fellowship but also teach at various universities. They highlighted the importance of education in their personal journeys. White spoke fondly of his upbringing in a family of educators. “Education was everywhere around me,” he said. His path into academia felt natural due to this support.
Camp reminisced about the moments that made teaching rewarding, especially when he observed students realizing their potential. Tarver emphasized a hands-on teaching style, using the challenging 4×5 camera to build a strong foundation in photography. “It prepares them better,” he explained.
Williams, who joined academia after earning his Master of Fine Arts, finds joy in teaching eager students. “It’s a symbiotic relationship,” he remarked humorously about the age gap between himself and his students.
This exhibition not only showcases remarkable art but also emphasizes the vital role of mentorship and education in the artists’ careers. Their experiences underline the lasting impact of both personal and professional connections within the art community.
