Imphal, Manipur — On October 17, during the closing session of the Indian Himalayan Region Climate Change Conclave 2025, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla emphasized the importance of collaboration among Himalayan and Northeastern states to combat climate change.
The two-day event, hosted by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, focused on vital topics like climate adaptation in the Indian Himalayan region. Governor Bhalla praised the organizers for their efforts, highlighting that the Northeast experiences some of the most severe impacts of climate change. He pointed out rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, leading to increased floods and droughts in Manipur.
“Real change happens when science, policy, and community work together,” said Bhalla. He advocated for integrating climate budgeting across all sectors and fostering community resilience in the Northeast.
He welcomed the release of the State Action Plan on Climate Change Version 2.0, which aligns with the national strategy, providing a solid framework for action.
Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh, Director of Environment and Climate Change, outlined key focus areas, such as developing local risk assessments, enhancing institutional networks, and securing climate finance.
The conclave also launched significant publications, including studies on “Wetlands of Manipur” and a manual on innovative treatment systems for wetlands.
According to recent statistics from the IPCC, the Himalayan region is experiencing temperature increases of about 1.5 °C since the 20th century, highlighting the urgency of these discussions.
With ongoing challenges, experts call for immediate action. As climate concerns grow, social media trends show many individuals advocating for sustainable practices, reflecting a shift towards environmental awareness.
