Earl Johnson is more than just a graduate of Troy University; he’s been a vital force for change over the last thirty years. Graduating in 1970 with a degree in economics, Johnson has served as mayor of Andalusia since 2000 and has dedicated himself to both his community and his alma mater.
In 2015, Johnson joined the Troy University Board of Trustees, where he holds important roles on several committees, including finance and external affairs. But his involvement goes back even further. He has been a past president of the Covington County Alumni Chapter and chairs the Planned Giving Council. His commitment to Troy runs deep, with familial roots stretching back to when the school was known as Troy State Teachers College.
“Troy gave me an education that opened doors,” Johnson shared. “My family has a strong connection here. My mother and brother graduated from TROY, and many cousins did too.” His experience and affection for the university inspire his ongoing contributions to its growth.
One of Johnson’s notable achievements was leading the renovation of the university’s main quad in the early 2000s. Dr. Jack Hawkins, TROY’s Chancellor, noted, “Earl’s vision created a focal point for our campus—a beautiful area that developed from the original plans by the Olmsted Brothers.” The quad, now adorned with a Trojan Warrior statue, is a gathering spot for students and a popular photo op during graduation.
“The quad project started the transformation of this campus into the stunning space it is today,” Johnson said. “The Trojan statue builds pride and connection for everyone.”
Recently, Johnson has joined efforts with Mrs. Janice Hawkins to enhance the beauty of the university’s lagoon, adjacent to the cultural arts park. Dr. Hawkins remarked, “Earl has played a pivotal role in making Troy University one of Alabama’s most beautiful campuses.”
Johnson has also been instrumental in elevating Troy University athletics. As the university transitioned to NCAA Division I sports, he helped raise funds to support this critical decision, which many initially questioned but has since proven beneficial.
In 2012, he became the Founding Chairman of the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame Board, recognizing 89 distinguished athletes and contributors. “It’s an honor to celebrate the incredible history of athletics at TROY,” he remarked, highlighting the quality of their annual induction banquet.
Johnson earned a law degree from Samford University and has practiced law in Andalusia since 1974. He and his wife, Sylvia, have two daughters and four grandchildren. Dr. Hawkins summed it up well: “Earl Johnson’s leadership is a tremendous asset to Troy University and Alabama. He’s dedicated to improving both.”
Today, as the university continues evolving, leaders like Johnson are crucial in shaping its future. His efforts remind us all of the difference dedicated individuals can make in education and community development.
