Transformative Volunteer Experiences: Franciscan University Students Making an Impact in Ecuador and Steubenville

In Steubenville, Ohio, over 30 students and staff from Franciscan University took part in a summer mission program, making a real impact in the lives of others. For nearly three weeks, a group of 20 students, along with their advisors and friars, traveled to Olon, Ecuador. They served at the Fundacion Santa María del Fiat and its associated school.

The mission was filled with meaningful activities. Each morning, the students taught English to local elementary and high school kids. In the afternoons, they offered help with homework, organized sports, and engaged in music, bringing joy to the children at the foundation. This organization provides a safe haven for kids facing tough family situations.

Sophomore Amelie Fontenot from Lafayette, Louisiana, described her experience as transformative. “The children welcomed me with open arms,” she shared. “They have so little, yet they show so much joy and love. It’s a lesson I didn’t expect.” She felt deeply moved as she learned about the children’s struggles. One girl revealed she had no friends, while another boy expressed his wish to return home, despite safety concerns. “Everyone is suffering,” Fontenot said. “What people want most is simply to be loved.”

Senior Anabel Stickney from Butler, Pennsylvania, found her memorable moment in a shared praise song with the girls. “We sang together for over an hour,” she recalled. “It didn’t matter that we spoke different languages; our faith connected us.” She took home valuable insights about slowing down for faith and prayer, inspired by the kids’ strong beliefs despite their backgrounds.

Alongside the Ecuador mission, seven other students and two friars participated in local services in Steubenville and Pittsburgh. They worked at places like St. Anthony House and local food pantries, supporting those in need within the Ohio Valley.

Each year, Franciscan University sends over 300 students on more than a dozen missions, both in the U.S. and abroad, always striving to share love and support with those who need it the most.
