As part of the new hymnbook, “Hymns for Home and Church,” Church leaders have taken a close look at the lyrics to ensure they clearly teach the doctrine of Christ. Some songs will be updated to better reflect scriptural teachings and strengthen faith.
One notable example is the cherished children’s song “When I Am Baptized,” originally from the 1989 “Children’s Songbook.” This song’s lyrics have been revised for the new hymnbook to enhance understanding of baptism.
In a social media post on December 20, 2025, Primary General President Susan H. Porter shared her excitement about these updates, highlighting how they help children grasp the significance of baptism. The revised version first appeared in the January issue of the “Friend,” a magazine for children published by the Church.
The song used to say, “I know when I am baptized, my wrongs are washed away, and I can be forgiven and improve myself each day.” The new version changes this to: “I know when I am baptized, I choose the Savior’s way. And I will be forgiven as I turn to Him each day.”
President Porter explained that the language around baptism needed clarity. “We know when children choose to be baptized, they’re making a covenant with our Heavenly Father,” she noted. The previous line suggested that water itself washed away sins, while in reality, that cleansing comes through the Savior.
According to President Porter, “The Book of Mormon” emphasizes the Savior’s role in cleansing our hearts through the Holy Ghost. This provides children with a fresh understanding of repentance and forgiveness—a true gift as they learn about their faith.
Changes don’t stop with this song. Other hymns in the collection will also receive updates to improve doctrinal accuracy and replace any outdated phrases. Additionally, the new hymns will be easier to sing and accompany, making them more accessible for everyone.
As society evolves, so does the language we use in hymns. It’s important to ensure that music continues to inspire and resonates with current values while maintaining its sacred roots.
