To celebrate Miami’s rich history and its strong Cuban American community, Florida International University (FIU) is launching CasaCuba. This exciting cultural and academic center will focus on Cuban heritage, history, and research.
CasaCuba will feature a spacious 43,000-square-foot building designed for exhibitions and classrooms. It aims to be a welcoming place for visitors locally and globally, encouraging discussions and sharing inspiration. This center will also highlight the stories and contributions of the Cuban diaspora and its influence in South Florida.
Generous support has fueled this project. U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Benjamín León Jr., an honorary alumnus of FIU, donated $10 million to help make CasaCuba a reality. Additional funding has come from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation. Prominent Cuban American business leader Jorge Mas has also contributed $5 million towards this initiative.
The groundbreaking ceremony for CasaCuba is set to take place later this year, marking a significant milestone for the community.
Cuba is at a pivotal point in its history, with hopes for a more democratic future. FIU’s wealth of knowledge about Cuba will play a crucial role during this time. Recently, FIU announced a new initiative dedicated to aiding Cuba’s transition toward democracy. This initiative, led by President Jeanette M. Nuñez, aims to combine the university’s extensive scholarship and its commitment to democratic values to support the changes needed in Cuba.
Interestingly, recent surveys indicate that a significant portion of the Cuban American community is eager for political change in Cuba, with 74% expressing optimism about future reforms. This sense of hope aligns perfectly with CasaCuba’s mission to be a center for education and dialogue on these pressing issues.
As the project unfolds, many are already sharing their excitement on social media, with the hashtag #CasaCuba trending among discussions about cultural heritage and democratic values. This response showcases the strong desire within the community to connect and reflect on their roots and future.
