Riedel Communications has helped Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) modernize its production systems. With a new setup based on MediorNet technology, the university aims to improve communication and production for sports and events.
This transition moves EKU from an older SDI framework to the SMPTE ST 2110 network, which allows signal routing over a 100-gigabit fiber network connecting various locations, like Alumni Coliseum and the Center for the Arts. This new system offers flexibility for live productions and streamlines workflows across multiple venues.
Dwayne Bolin, a Video Systems Engineer at EKU, highlights that “consistency and flexibility” were key goals. They retained existing equipment while creating a unified setup, making it easier for staff to switch between locations. With help from Bridge Digital, a lot of the heavy lifting was done upfront, allowing the team to focus on training and operations.
Previously, EKU had limited routing options due to point-to-point fiber connections. The new infrastructure uses existing fiber connections along with commercial IP switches. This reduces the need for additional fiber setup, making operations more efficient.
Central to the new system are two hubs in the Perkins Building and Alumni Coliseum. Signals from various sports are routed through these hubs based on their location, easing management and control. The Center for the Arts is also part of the network, catering to events like concerts and graduations, using advanced camera and audio systems for seamless production.
The MediorNet FusioN frames integrate SDI equipment, enhancing workflows and enabling the use of existing cameras. They also feature tools for monitoring network operations, making management easier.
Aubrey Shamel from Bridge Digital notes, “FusioN bridges the past and present. EKU had fiber that wasn’t fully used. By adopting ST 2110, they can route signals freely without disrupting workflows.” This flexibility, he adds, made the transition quicker and more budget-friendly.
Communication on campus is enhanced by Bolero wireless intercom systems and PunQtum wired systems in control areas. Katie Adkins, the Assistant Director of Broadcasting and Video at EKU, says this combination has transformed their operations, improving show quality and preparing students for real-world challenges.
After the installation, EKU successfully produced its first football game with the new setup, demonstrating its effectiveness from day one.
