Eghosa Erhumwunse, the country director of SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria, recently urged media professionals to step up their coverage of climate change issues. This call to action came during a climate change media workshop held in Lagos on September 4, 2025.
Erhumwunse emphasized the urgent need for more focused discussions around climate change. He believes media can shape public opinions and influence policy. By enhancing coverage of climate issues, journalists can help steer important decisions and actions.
He encouraged media outlets to adopt creative storytelling methods to highlight climate challenges. Erhumwunse pointed out the importance of supporting young activists making strides in environmental sustainability. SOS Children’s Villages has recognized promising youth leaders and named them “Eco Champions” to amplify their efforts.
“Your energy and creativity are key in advancing our climate agenda,” he told the Eco Champions. He explained that climate change isn’t just about the environment; it’s a social justice issue impacting future generations. Young people often feel the brunt of these changes, making their voices crucial in this dialogue.
In a similar vein, David Lemuel, coordinator of the Eco Champions Programme, noted that women and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Disruptions in weather patterns can impact food production, posing risks of malnutrition, especially for children.
The workshop also featured strong words from Eco Champion Hannah Omokhaye. She urged her peers to take the initiative on climate action. “We must create change ourselves,” she said, stressing that the future of our planet is at stake.
Recent data underscores these concerns: a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that climate-related disasters disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including women and children. As Erhumwunse highlighted, intergenerational collaboration and inclusive climate policies are essential for creating a sustainable future.
The ongoing conversation about climate change makes it clear: everyone has a role to play. By amplifying the voices of young climate activists and promoting responsible media coverage, we can work together for a resilient future.
