A generous donation from alumni Christopher A. Cole and Barbie Cole has established the Griffin-Cole Climate and Energy Grand Challenge Fund at Princeton’s High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI). This initiative aims to enrich research opportunities for students and encourage innovative solutions to climate and energy challenges.
President Christopher L. Eisgruber highlighted how this contribution enhances collaborative environmental research at Princeton. “Chris and Barbie Cole’s generosity boosts our efforts in tackling climate change,” he said.
The Grand Challenge Fund focuses on interdisciplinary research, bringing together faculty and students to address pressing environmental issues. Recently, five research teams received funding to explore alternative energy, energy efficiency, climate dynamics, and ecosystem impacts. These projects not only advance knowledge but also engage students directly in meaningful research.
Chris Cole, a noteworthy figure in finance as the co-founder of Ardea Partners and former Goldman Sachs leader, emphasized the importance of addressing climate change. “We see funding research at Princeton as a vital way to marry our interests in education and the environment.”
Barbie Cole, an architect with a strong background in environmental advocacy, echoed this sentiment. She believes the blend of teaching and research fosters impactful learning experiences for students.
The Coles’ dedication to environmental causes is evident in their past roles with various organizations. Chris Cole has served on the board of the Environmental Defense Fund, while Barbie has contributed to the Watershed Institute and Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation.
Supporting such initiatives aligns with broader trends where educational institutions are increasingly incentivizing student involvement in real-world research. A recent survey by the Pew Research Center reveals that 71% of Americans view environmental protection as a high priority, indicating a widespread push for sustainable solutions.
The Cole family’s commitment exemplifies how philanthropy can lead to meaningful change. Their donation is part of Princeton’s ongoing Venture Forward campaign, which aims to strengthen alumni engagement and support the university’s strategic goals through 2025.
