The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has struck deals with ACE Limited and JCB India Limited to purchase 1,868 Rough Terrain Fork Lift Trucks (RTFLT) for the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy. The total cost of this procurement is Rs 697.35 crore. Defence Secretary R K Singh oversaw the signing of these contracts.

The RTFLT is essential for combat and logistics support. It will help lift heavy loads, reducing the need for manual handling. This enhances the operational effectiveness of the armed forces, allowing them to focus on their critical missions.
This procurement is classified as a Buy (Indian) case. It aims to boost India’s defence manufacturing capabilities. By working with local manufacturers, the project has the potential to create numerous jobs and support small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in producing components. Overall, this initiative plays a crucial part in modernizing India’s defence infrastructure while promoting self-reliance under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
On February 20, 2025, the MoD also finalized a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru to acquire 149 Software Defined Radios (SDRs) for the Indian Coast Guard. This deal totals Rs 1,220.12 crore and falls under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
These advanced radios will facilitate secure communication and information sharing, allowing for better situational awareness among Coast Guard personnel. They will aid in vital tasks like maritime law enforcement, search and rescue missions, protecting fisheries, and safeguarding marine environments. Moreover, these SDRs will improve coordination for joint operations with the Indian Navy.
This project is a strategic move to strengthen the Coast Guard’s capabilities and aligns with India’s goals for a Blue Economy, enhancing maritime security. Supporting the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, this contract will also build the country’s capacity to manufacture high-tech communication systems, creating jobs and nurturing skilled professionals in the process.
