Transforming Delhi’s Railway Stations: How Indian Railways is Revitalizing Travel with the Amrit Bharat Scheme

Last month, I hopped on a train from Delhi Sarai Rohilla to Jaipur and couldn’t help but notice the ongoing construction at the station. It led me to wonder: is this place ever going to be finished?

That construction is part of a major effort to upgrade India’s railway stations into modern urban centers. Thirteen stations in Delhi are included in this plan.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched by the Ministry of Railways, aims to rejuvenate 1,338 stations across the country. Among these, Delhi’s busiest stations, such as Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi, are set for significant changes.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared updates about the progress in Delhi.

So, what’s happening at these stations?

At Bijwasan and Safdarjung, the main buildings are nearly complete, with the finishing touches being added. Meanwhile, Delhi Cantt is making headway with the east-side structure and an elevated road.

New Delhi station, a key hub, is undergoing complex renovations. A holding area at Ajmeri Gate is ready, and they’re digging a double basement on the Paharganj side—all while keeping train service running!

Even lesser-known stations like Narela and Subzi Mandi are getting modern upgrades, including accessible restrooms, lifts, and improved platforms. Tughlakabad is also working on tactile paths and ramps, ensuring everyone can navigate easily.

The excitement isn’t just limited to Delhi. Across India, improvements are being made. However, the railway ministry hasn’t provided the latest updates on those projects yet.

Statistics show that upgrading railway infrastructure can lead to increased passenger satisfaction and safety. According to a recent survey, nearly 70% of train travelers in India express a desire for better station facilities.

In conclusion, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme represents a significant leap toward modernizing India’s railway stations, aligning with global standards in transportation. Through these improvements, the aim is not just to enhance travel experiences but to also create vibrant community spaces that serve as gateways to the nation.
