Transforming Dorms: West Virginia University at Parkersburg Breathes New Life into Ohio Valley University Residences

West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) is set to welcome students into its new residence halls this fall. Located at the Innovation and Technology Center (ITC), these accommodations promise to enhance the campus experience for many students.

The former Ohio Valley University residence halls are being transformed into comfortable living spaces. With the renovation work underway, officials aim to finish by August. The first 55 units will include 28 for female students and 27 for male students. Each room comes equipped with essential furnishings like a bed, desk, wardrobe, and a sink. Plus, students will enjoy amenities such as on-site laundry and free Wi-Fi.

Olivia Reeder, President and CEO of the WVUP Foundation, highlights the importance of these new facilities. “Housing is crucial for expanding access and supporting student success,” she notes. With new programs launching at the ITC, on-campus housing meets a growing need. It will benefit students facing housing challenges or those who commute long distances.

The foundation is committed to managing the residence halls and ensuring compliance with state regulations. Reeder emphasized that this ownership reflects their dedication to student support and long-term growth. The new living arrangements aim to create a vibrant campus community, enhancing student engagement and collaboration.

According to recent statistics, nearly 14% of college students in America experience housing insecurity. These new residence halls at WVUP will directly address this issue, allowing for a more inclusive campus environment. The addition of housing is expected to attract a diverse student body and ultimately reshape the university’s future over the next decade.

WVUP President Torie Jackson shared that the renovations will cost about $500,000, funded in part through third-party partnerships. The ITC is designed to serve as a hub for high-demand career training, focusing on areas like Computer Science and Cybersecurity. The combination of quality education and access to affordable housing is set to prepare students for successful careers.
