In Pennsylvania, 46 projects will bring environmental education to various communities. These initiatives will happen in classrooms, parks, and even at summer camps. Students will learn about watersheds, conduct air and water quality research, and engage in workshops about conservation and sustainability.
The Environmental Education Grants Program offers funds primarily to projects that reach underserved communities. This year, 35 projects will target areas facing environmental justice issues, enhancing educational opportunities for many.
“Environmental education is for everyone, from kids to adults,” said DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley. “These grants will help strengthen connections to the environment and improve educational resources in communities that need it most.”

Pennsylvania Envirothon Inc. received funding for its program, which educates high school students across several critical environmental topics like aquatic ecology and climate change. Chester County Economic Development Foundation launched “The Climate Connect,” a program aimed at K-8 students that includes hands-on learning through weather and air quality stations.
Women for a Healthy Environment promotes the Eco-Student Stewardship Program, which will allow students in grades 6-12 to engage in workshops on clean water, air quality, and waste management.

Research shows that environmental education can significantly enhance students’ understanding of their surroundings and develop critical thinking skills. According to a survey by the North American Association for Environmental Education, over 80% of educators reported that students who participate in environmental programs exhibit greater interest in science and environmental issues.

Upcoming Opportunities
