Madaba, May 24 — The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) met with the German Jordanian University (GJU) recently to explore ways to enhance academic programs focused on climate adaptation and sustainability. The aim is to better prepare students for future environmental challenges.
GJU President Ala’aldeen Halhouli welcomed the FAO team, which included experts in policy, education, and climate change. Their discussion is part of the “Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agriculture Sector” project. This initiative, supported by the Green Climate Fund and in collaboration with the Jordanian government and the UN Development Program (UNDP), targets areas in the Dead Sea Basin, such as Madaba, Karak, Tafileh, and Ma’an.
The project seeks to improve water-use efficiency in agriculture, crucial in a region facing water scarcity. By implementing adaptive water systems, the project aims to boost livelihoods and food security while integrating climate resilience into various sectors, including policy-making and civil society.
During the meeting, they reviewed an analysis of GJU’s engineering curricula. The findings highlighted a strong focus on sustainability and environmental challenges. There’s potential to further enrich this curriculum to better equip students for tackling climate issues.
Halhouli emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering sustainability and climate action within its educational framework. This collaboration with FAO marks a significant step towards creating an academic setting that is more attuned to climate-related issues, ensuring graduates have the tools they need for a sustainable future.
