Southern University, a prominent HBCU, is making exciting strides in education with its new $70 million STEM facility. This complex aims to enhance science and technology learning on campus and is scheduled to open in 2027.
The topping-off ceremony, marking the placement of the final beam, drew university leaders, faculty, students, and state officials together. This event highlights not just construction but a significant investment in STEM fields at Louisiana’s flagship public HBCU.
Chancellor John K. Pierre expressed optimism about the facility, seeing it as a chance to revitalize STEM education at the university. Funded through Louisiana’s Capital Outlay Act, the project is set to replace the aging William Henry James Hall.
According to recent reports, modern tech updates will help students compete with peers nationwide. This investment in facilities is part of a broader trend; nationally, HBCUs see an uptick in funding for science and technology to boost educational opportunities. For instance, a 2020 report from the National Center for Education Statistics indicated a 10% increase in STEM degrees awarded at HBCUs compared to the previous year.
The new STEM complex will encompass 86,000 to 94,000 square feet and will include:
- 21 laboratories for various scientific areas
- 16 classrooms
- Research labs and lecture halls
- Administrative offices
- Collaborative spaces and student commons
The design emphasizes adaptability, allowing instructors to modify spaces based on class needs. There will also be lounges and a coffee shop to create a welcoming environment for students.
Ken Dawson, a university representative, said, “This building is going to be amazing. We want to make a place students will love.”
With modern aesthetics, including a glass exterior and 24,000 square feet of new pathways, the facility is located at the heart of the campus. Lealon Martin, dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering, asserted that the goal is to become the top producer of STEM graduates.
As this state-of-the-art complex approaches its 2027 completion, Southern University reinforces its commitment to innovation, research, and educational excellence in science and technology. This project reflects a significant step forward—one that aligns Southern with broader educational trends and needs.
