Bald Head Island Academy, a K-8 school that emphasizes science and sustainability, recently received a generous $50,000 donation from Doug Witcher, a part-time resident of the island. Witcher is the founder of SmartChoice Insurance and the Douglas S. Witcher Family Foundation.

This donation is the largest in the school’s history, according to Dr. Louis Vaickus, the chair of the Bald Head Island Academy Board. The funds will help cover operational expenses, ensuring that the school continues its mission of providing quality education.

Located right by the beach, Bald Head Island Academy offers hands-on learning experiences for children aged 5 to 15. Students engage in earth sciences and explore maritime ecosystems, making learning both fun and relevant to their environment.

Sheree Vaickus, co-founder and Interim Head of School, described Witcher’s donation as “a life-changing moment” for the school. She emphasized the importance of community support in enhancing educational opportunities for students.

Witcher highlighted the significance of investing in education, saying, “Together, we can create opportunities for children to flourish and realize their potential.” He urged others to contribute to the academy, which plays a vital role in preserving the legacy of Bald Head Island.

The school has ambitious plans to establish a permanent charter school on the island, and support from donors like Witcher is crucial for turning this vision into reality.
