A new bipartisan bill in the US House of Representatives aims to enhance math and STEM education. Introduced by Congressman Chrissy Houlahan (Democrat) and Jim Baird (Republican), the Mathematical and Statistical Modelling Education Act will enable the National Science Foundation to update and support modern curricula in math and other STEM subjects.

This initiative comes in response to growing competition from countries like China and India, which are significantly investing in education, particularly in math and science. Houlahan highlighted the need to act fast to ensure American students stay competitive in the global market.
“While traveling, I’ve seen how our competitors are advancing in education,” he said. “We must ensure our students are prepared for a future where they can lead.”
Baird, a PhD scientist, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of STEM education for American innovation and national security. He noted that strong investments in education are vital for maintaining a skilled workforce to meet future challenges.
The bill has gained support from several education and mathematics organizations, showing a collective backing for improving STEM education from K-12. This initiative aims to create a robust platform for students to thrive in an evolving global landscape, ensuring they are well-equipped for the demands of tomorrow’s workforce.
