Our kids are the future, and education plays a big role in shaping their lives. Yet, we often hear about how our education system isn’t doing well. We’ve spent a lot of money on programs that promised results but didn’t deliver. Gaps in achievement remain, and performance is dropping. It’s important for us to explore fresh ideas to improve this situation. We may not all agree, but it’s crucial to share thoughts and experiences to find solutions together.

One big change I’d suggest is to rethink the idea that a college degree is necessary for success. This idea seems outdated and doesn’t reflect today’s job market. I have a finance degree, but I realize my job doesn’t require a degree at all.

I would change many aspects of the education system. The one-size-fits-all approach and certain disciplinary methods, especially for Black boys, often lead students to feel disconnected and unprepared for real life. I’ve worked in education since I was 19 and seen these flaws from early schooling to college. The system needs to do better in nurturing a love for learning.

As a GenX student, I felt my choices were limited. It was either college or trades, and I didn’t have the grades or money for a 4-year school, nor did I want to work as a mechanic. I had to chart my own path. Though it was tough, I found a career where I earned more than many of my college-educated peers. I’m proud of that journey.
