Transforming Education: Ugochukwu Onumadu Inspires Students at Austin Peay State University with a Global Perspective in Mathematics

Ugochukwu Onumadu’s Journey at APSU

When Ugochukwu Onumadu came to Austin Peay State University (APSU) to pursue his doctorate in education, he had a clear goal: to make math accessible to everyone. Shortly after arriving, he began teaching as an adjunct instructor in the mathematics department.

Recently, he was selected to represent APSU at the prestigious American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) conference as a Holmes Scholar. This opportunity brought him one step closer to his dream of becoming a global mathematics consultant and educational leader. "It was a pivotal moment. The conference offered a platform to push for equity and excellence in education," he shared. Onumadu returned from the event inspired and was even honored with the Chair’s Award of Excellence for his leadership and service.

At the conference, he focused on topics like ethical AI and creating a supportive environment for students. "One key takeaway for me was how AI is reshaping teaching. The discussions on using AI for engagement and inclusivity were enlightening," he noted.

Onumadu’s academic background is rich and diverse. He emphasizes that math is a universal language but one that people interpret differently based on their experiences. His journey began in Nigeria, where he learned creativity and perseverance; this was furthered by his studies in Germany, which honed his precision and research skills. In the U.S., he has blended innovation with equity into his educational approach.

In 2019, he published Math Language for Beginners Part 1, aimed at helping secondary and undergraduate students. "Many students don’t struggle with math itself but with its language," he explained. His book breaks down math concepts using the structure of language, making it easier for students who connect better with words than numbers.

As a graduate assistant at APSU’s Eriksson College of Education, Onumadu not only teaches Statistics I but also plays a vital role in faculty-led research. "This role has sharpened my teaching skills and deepened my understanding of mentorship as a key to academic success," he said.

Onumadu chose APSU after hearing positive feedback from a friend. "The university’s commitment to innovation and culturally responsive education was a huge draw for me. The support for international scholars made me feel this was the right place to grow," he stated.

Since starting at APSU in 2024, he has actively participated in several committees, including the AI Task Force and the Student Faculty Council. He appreciates the support from faculty members, stating, "They have been mentors and advocates, guiding my studies and professional growth."

As he moves forward with his doctoral program, Onumadu expresses gratitude for the enriching experience at APSU. "It has been a transformative journey. I’ve felt valued as both a student and a contributor to the university’s mission."
