“We want every student to feel safe, happy, and part of the classroom community,” says Matt Harrison, the lead researcher from the University of Melbourne. Recognizing a major gap in education, Harrison and SMART aim to elevate the perspectives of neurodivergent students.
Harrison points out that most studies rarely include the voices of neurodivergent students. “By talking directly to them, we gathered valuable insights into what truly helps.” This approach provides teachers with practical, research-based solutions for creating inclusive classrooms.
From their findings, 36 strategies were developed, aimed at helping educators create supportive environments. These tips cover everything from tech tools to better classroom designs, offering straightforward ways to improve inclusion right away.
Key strategies include:
- Transforming Engagement: Use specific EdTech tools that honor each student’s identity and needs.
- Empowering Student Voice: Involve students in selecting the tools they will use in the classroom.
- Child-Centered Practices: Focus on the strengths and unique needs of each student rather than sticking to traditional methods.
This research emphasizes how technology can change classrooms for the better. “These recommendations help educators build classrooms that focus on inclusivity,” says Jeff Lowe, Executive Vice President at SMART Technologies.
