Divert, Inc. has teamed up with United States Cold Storage (USCS) to tackle food waste in a smart way. Their new recycling program turns unsold food and beverages into renewable energy and nutrient-rich soil.

Sara Cook, USCS’s sustainable development manager, expresses excitement about the partnership, saying, “This collaboration is a big step for our sustainability goals. We aim to lessen our environmental impact while boosting efficiency.” She appreciates Divert’s commitment to innovation and the environment.

In this initiative, unsellable food from USCS’s California locations is sent to Divert’s Integrated Diversion and Energy Facility in Turlock. Here, advanced technology processes the waste, turning it into energy and soil amendments instead of letting it sit in a landfill where it can produce harmful greenhouse gases.

Andrew Johnston, VP and GM of industrials at Divert, highlights the opportunity this partnership presents. “By creating flexible solutions for our customers, we can drive significant environmental and operational impacts,” he notes. This collaboration shows how the cold storage industry can solve challenges and generate value—helping meet compliance and reduce emissions.

This program is also aligned with California’s Senate Bill 1383, which focuses on minimizing organic waste in landfills and encourages the use of anaerobic digestion for energy production.

This partnership reflects a growing trend toward sustainability in business. According to a 2022 survey by the Sustainable Food Trust, 75% of consumers said they prefer brands that have clear sustainability practices. Companies like Divert and USCS are responding to this demand by taking concrete steps toward a greener future.
