Transforming Futures: How a Groundbreaking Investment is Launching Roberts Academy at Elon University for Children with Dyslexia

A new academy dedicated to children with dyslexia is coming to North Carolina, thanks to the generosity of Marjorie and Hal Roberts. Opening in Fall 2026 at Elon University, the Roberts Academy will be unique as the state’s only university-based private school focused on dyslexia education.

The Roberts Academy aims to be a model for effective literacy programs across the country. Initially, it will serve third and fourth graders, expanding to grade levels one through six by Fall 2028. Once fully operational, the school expects to support 150 to 200 students each year, with small class sizes to ensure personal attention.

At the heart of the academy’s teaching philosophy is the Orton-Gillingham method. This multisensory approach is known for its effectiveness in helping students overcome reading challenges. The academy plans to offer a two-to-three-year program, preparing students to transition back to their regular schools equipped with the skills they need to succeed.

Elon University President Connie Ledoux Book expressed the broader impact of the academy, stating, “This is not just a gift to Elon. It provides resources and a supportive community for families. It prepares future teachers with evidence-based methods to reach every child.”

The Roberts’ motivation stems from their experiences with three grandchildren who learned differently. They have previously established schools in collaboration with other universities, including Vanderbilt and Mercer, focused on supporting children with dyslexia.

A dedicated center for dyslexia and engaged learning will also be created at Elon, offering training and resources for educators and policymakers. Currently, dyslexia affects an estimated 10-20% of the U.S. population, highlighting the need for specialized support in education.

Assistant Professor Alicia Tate will lead the academy’s efforts as interim director. With a strong background in structured literacy approaches, she will ensure the school meets the needs of its students while providing practical training for future educators.

As the academy gears up for its opening, it represents a significant step forward in addressing the educational needs of children with dyslexia. The Roberts aim to transform lives through compassionate teaching and effective strategies, instilling confidence in students as they learn to read and thrive.
