IndigeFit Kids is teaming up with the Minnesota Vikings to create more sports opportunities for Native kids. Lester Bagley, the Vikings’ executive vice president of public affairs, mentioned that more details will be shared soon.
Natasha Hacker, the Vice Chairwoman of SMSC, shared that this three-year campaign will focus on various important areas. They plan to research health issues affecting Native communities, offer grants for sports programs, and support activities like gardening and dance. Advocacy for better health policies will also be a key part of the initiative.
Hacker emphasized that the IndigeFit Kids campaign reflects the tribe’s dedication to helping its community.
The tribe, known as Scott County’s largest employer, often invests in local initiatives. For instance, they contributed to the renovation of the American Indian Center, according to Executive Director Mary LaGarde.
In 2019, tribal leaders launched a $5 million effort called Understand Native Minnesota. This initiative aimed to enhance knowledge about Native American history and culture in schools. It provided grants, research, and training for teachers across the state, concluding last year.
