This week, all eyes are on Washington, D.C. President Trump has been inaugurated, and the 119th Congress is getting to work, with Republicans in control of both the House and the Senate.
With new leadership comes fresh opportunities and challenges. Congress is strategizing how to fund the federal government by March 14, raise the debt ceiling, and utilize reconciliation. This budget tool allows them to bypass the Senate filibuster, enabling them to pass legislation with just a simple majority. They are focusing on key areas like taxes, border security, energy, and reducing the deficit.
These developments create chances to advocate for essential hospital priorities while also presenting hurdles we need to navigate. For instance, we’re pushing to extend the Marketplace Premium Tax Credits. This will help millions of Americans keep their health insurance. We’re also advocating for better access to care in rural areas and seeking relief from policies that distract caregivers from their important work.
On the defensive side, we must prevent cuts to Medicaid and Medicare funding, which could threaten hospital services. It’s crucial to protect the 340B Drug Pricing Program and maintain the tax-exempt status of non-profit hospitals, allowing them to continue serving their communities effectively.

As we anticipate a busy period on Capitol Hill, here are three ways hospital and health system leaders can ensure our voices are heard:
- Stay connected with AHA and Coalition. The AHA will provide updates and resources to help you advocate effectively. The Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare, of which AHA is a founding member, will also mobilize support and run ads on key issues.
- Share your story with lawmakers. Your personal experiences and insights matter. Engage your team, trustees, patients, and community to communicate to senators and representatives how policies impact local care. You are their constituents and can influence their understanding of healthcare challenges.
- Remain united. As new legislative proposals emerge, it’s crucial for our field to stay united. When we speak together with one voice, lawmakers take notice and respond.
Even in uncertain times, hospitals remain steadfast sources of health, healing, and hope. Their commitment to life-saving care and community wellness will never waver. Together, we can continue to enhance health across America.
