Resmetirom, also known as Rezdiffra, is making waves in the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). While its benefits for liver health are well-known since its FDA approval, fresh studies are now highlighting how it impacts patients’ overall quality of life.
Dr. Zobair Younossi, a respected figure in liver research, presented new findings at the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases’ (AASLD) Liver Meeting 2025. His focus was on how resmetirom affects health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients, both with and without cirrhosis.
Dr. Younossi emphasizes, “We often look at medical metrics like liver function tests. But the real question is—how do patients feel? Their experiences matter.”
In the MAESTRO-NAFLD trial, researchers studied over 1,300 patients. This included 193 who had cirrhosis. The trial was thorough, measuring HRQoL at various points during treatment. For patients with cirrhosis, significant improvements were recorded in their HRQoL scores by week 24, with benefits continuing for up to 52 weeks.
Notably, those without cirrhosis showed a decline in quality of life with placebo during the trial, while those receiving resmetirom reported improvements in several areas, including worry and health distress. On average, these patients enjoyed enhancements of up to 7% in specific symptoms related to their condition.
One interesting point from the research is the contrast with older treatments. Past therapies, like interferon for hepatitis C, often caused side effects that harmed HRQoL. In stark contrast, resmetirom not only spared patients from declining quality of life but helped elevate it.
This finding aligns with broader health trends. Data from a recent survey highlighted that 70% of patients prioritize HRQoL when considering their treatments. As the medical community shifts towards a more patient-centered approach, findings like these are crucial.
Dr. Younossi’s insights remind us that medication isn’t just about clinical numbers; it’s also about enhancing the day-to-day lives of patients. With resmetirom, there’s an opportunity not just to improve liver health, but to significantly boost patients’ overall experiences.
