Cyberjaya has taken a big step toward improving public health. Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai, the founder of Top Glove Corporation, recently signed an agreement with the University of Cyberjaya (UoC). This aims to create the Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai Visiting Professorship in Lifestyle Medicine, backed by a generous RM2 million fund.
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle Medicine focuses on reducing chronic diseases, like diabetes, through healthy lifestyle choices. This includes promoting good eating habits, regular exercise, quality sleep, effective stress management, and building strong social ties.
The fund is a joint effort, with RM1 million from Dr. Lim and another RM1 million from the university. It will support teaching, research, and community programs that encourage people to make healthier choices.
Global Expertise at UoC
This initiative will bring experts in Lifestyle Medicine from around the world to UoC. They will work with university staff and students, conduct lectures, and collaborate on research. The goal is to improve understanding of how small lifestyle changes can greatly benefit health, reducing reliance on medications.
Dr. Lim believes that simple changes in daily life can have a powerful impact. He advocates for his “5 Healthy Wells” philosophy: Clean Well, Eat Well, Work Well, Exercise Well, and Sleep Well. “Investing in education and health is crucial for developing healthier communities,” he said.
Growing Global Trends
According to recent studies, lifestyle diseases are a pressing concern worldwide. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2025, chronic diseases will account for 73% of global deaths. This emphasizes the need for preventive measures in healthcare, especially in countries like Malaysia.
Furthermore, social media is buzzing with support for lifestyle changes. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok showcase daily routines and healthy eating tips, inspiring many to take charge of their health.
The Future of Healthcare
The university plans to seek candidates who excel in Lifestyle Medicine, hoping to announce the new professor soon. UoC aims to strengthen Malaysia’s position in preventive healthcare, focusing on education and public health awareness.
Professor Dr. David Whitford, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of UoC, expressed gratitude to Dr. Lim for his support. He noted that this partnership will significantly enhance educational efforts and impact future healthcare professionals.
This initiative marks a significant commitment to community health and underscores the role of universities in promoting healthier lifestyles. The Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai Visiting Professorship in Lifestyle Medicine could pave the way for a healthier future for many.
