Korea University Medical Center (KUMC) is making strides in healthcare by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its medical systems. The goal? To enhance patient care and improve efficiency.
KUMC is focusing on its emergency department, where it plans to use AI to manage bed occupancy and track medical resources in real-time. This will help hospitals respond faster and allocate resources more effectively, particularly during crises like natural disasters or health outbreaks.
Right now, researchers at KUMC are developing a system that can predict resource needs in emergency situations. This tool will help ensure that hospitals are ready to handle sudden surges in patients, something that has become increasingly important during recent health crises.
The role of AI doesn’t stop there. KUMC is also boosting its cybersecurity efforts by employing AI to protect medical data. Data encryption will become more advanced, ensuring patient information remains secure as it’s shared across institutions.
A major project in the works is a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create a cloud-based data lake. This will allow KUMC to store and analyze large amounts of data, supporting research aimed at precision medicine. By examining genes, lifestyle choices, and health history, KUMC can tailor treatments to individual patients.
In addition, the center is planning to develop AI chatbots and telehealth platforms to provide more accessible healthcare. Earlier this year, Sang-Heon Lee, KUMC’s Chief Information Officer, mentioned that they are preparing to use large language models in patient care, having already gathered data on about six million patients.
In Lee’s words: "We will continue to upgrade our infrastructure so that new technologies can be flexibly incorporated and the system can be operated stably."
KUMC is not just focusing on internal innovations. It is actively seeking partnerships with leading health IT companies. In February, KUMC announced a five-year collaboration with Royal Philips to create AI solutions for diagnosing neurological and cardiovascular diseases. Collaborations like these will build a more comprehensive digital pathology system and enable seamless data exchange across KUMC campuses.
Dr. Yoon Eul-Sik, KUMC’s Vice President of Medical Affairs, expressed this vision succinctly: “We will strengthen international cooperation to lead the standardization of medical data and continue innovation to leap forward as a super-gap future hospital.”
As healthcare increasingly embraces technology, KUMC is paving the way for a more efficient and patient-centric approach, showing how AI can dramatically transform healthcare services. This not only promises a brighter future for patients but also sets a benchmark for hospitals worldwide.
