The Duluth Salvation Army held its first distribution day recently. This event aims to help around a thousand families prepare for a joyful Christmas.
Organizers started planning months in advance, gathering gifts and donations. Cyndi Lewis, the Community Engagement Director, shared her excitement. “Seeing this gym filled with people feels like being in Santa’s workshop. Everyone is here for their complete Christmas,” she said.
During the distribution, children received toys, board games, and stocking stuffers. Families were also able to pick up food for their holiday meals. Interestingly, this year saw a rise in applications for assistance. Thankfully, local businesses stepped up to help.
“Super One has been an incredible partner. When we asked for more food, they immediately agreed to cover the extra needs,” Cyndi explained. “We rely on support from community partners to make this happen.”
To encourage more donations, Super One allows shoppers to round up their purchase amounts at the register. Additionally, a Miner’s match doubles the contributions. People can also volunteer to ring at red kettles, raising between $30 to $100 an hour for the cause.
According to a recent survey by the Salvation Army, demand for holiday assistance has surged by 20% nationwide in the last year. This shows how crucial local support systems like the Salvation Army are, especially during tough economic times. The increase in applications highlights ongoing challenges many families are facing.
Community reactions have been positive. Social media has seen posts from families who have benefited, sharing their gratitude for the support received. This spirit of giving and community underscores the importance of local partnerships in spreading holiday cheer.
