A new partnership is brewing between Stony Brook University and onsemi, a manufacturer known for its silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors. Together, they plan to build a $20 million semiconductor research and development facility right on campus.

This center aims to maximize the potential of silicon carbide chips, a crucial component in clean energy technologies. According to Stony Brook, this innovative space will help develop cutting-edge technologies that support our push for cleaner energy solutions.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “We’re fortifying our national security and boosting New York’s role as a leader in the semiconductor industry.” The facility not only promises to enhance technology but also aims to create a more resilient future for Long Island.

Dinesh Ramanathan, onsemi’s Senior Vice President, echoed this sentiment. He said, “This center will be a catalyst for innovation in the field of power semiconductors.” The goal is to build a workforce skilled in this vital area, ensuring that new breakthroughs continue to emerge.

Onsemi is committing $8 million to support the center, while Stony Brook University will invest $10 million in updates and equipment. Additionally, Empire State Development is slated to provide up to $2 million in grants.

Andrea Goldsmith, the incoming president of Stony Brook University, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “This partnership presents great opportunities for economic development and reinforces our national security.”

At this center, students and researchers will focus on crystal growth and processing to produce high-quality silicon carbide crystals. Professor Michael Dudley will lead the center, stating his belief that it will foster a comprehensive approach to semiconductor development.

As technology evolves, the need for skilled professionals in this field becomes ever more critical. A 2022 study from the Semiconductor Industry Association noted that the global semiconductor market is expected to reach over $1 trillion by 2030.
