Transforming Leadership: University of Georgia Provost Steps in as UC Riverside’s New Chancellor

Michael V. Drake, President of the University of California, introduced S. Jack Hu as UC Riverside’s new chancellor on May 28. This appointment was approved by the UC Board of Regents during a special meeting in Sacramento.

Hu brings nearly 40 years of experience in higher education. He has been the provost at the University of Georgia since 2019 and previously served as vice president for research at the University of Michigan. His leadership style emphasizes collaboration and innovation.

Starting July 15, Hu will lead UC Riverside. President Drake praised his track record of enhancing opportunities for students and faculty, stating, "Dr. Hu has the academic insight to push the campus forward."

While at the University of Georgia, Hu oversaw a budget exceeding $620 million for research in 2024. This investment helped the university maintain its position as a top U.S. institution for research commercialization. In fact, in 2024, it ranked first for bringing research to market.

Hu expressed his excitement about joining UC Riverside, saying, "This university transforms lives through knowledge." He sees great potential for the school to lead in higher education.

During his time at Georgia, Hu prioritized research in electric mobility and initiated partnerships with local industries. He championed interdisciplinary efforts, creating centers for research in subjects like precision agriculture and artificial intelligence. Hu also established the Humanities Council and supported cultural events like the annual Spotlight on the Arts festival.

Janet Reilly, chair of the UC Board of Regents, described Hu as a team player whose leadership will enhance UC Riverside’s community engagement and research.

Hu has dedicated himself to improving education. Under his guidance, the University of Georgia achieved a remarkable six-year graduation rate of over 90%, a significant increase in graduate enrollments, and successful partnerships with rural communities. His Rural Engagement Workshop has secured nearly $12.5 million in funding for various projects.

His engineering research has received $46 million in external funding. Hu is also a founding member of Barack Obama’s Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, focusing on enhancing American manufacturing. He has earned numerous awards for his contributions, including the William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award.

Hu will succeed Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox, who has significantly expanded UC Riverside’s programs and enrollment since 2013. Under his leadership, the university joined the Association of American Universities, a goal realized after a decade of efforts.

Born in Hunan, China, Hu studied at Tianjin University before earning advanced degrees in mechanical engineering in Michigan. Beyond academics, he enjoys Chinese literature and calligraphy. His wife, Jun Du, is a pianist.

The appointment of Hu marks a new chapter for UC Riverside, promising growth and innovation in the years to come.
